I think it’s just a culmination of emotion that builds up and needs to go somewhere. The energy travels from my ears, to my brain and awaits marching orders. It can start as a tingle in the back of my neck and then it breaks. Certain songs just have an ability to send shivers all over my body. Here’s a small sample.

1. Cat Stevens “The Wind”

It’s short so there’s not a lot of time for it to happen. But it almost always does. A stunningly majestic and simple song full of longing. Perfectly recorded, perfectly performed and achingly beautiful.

2. Pearl Jam “Black”

My reaction to this song has perhaps lessened over the years. Maybe it’s because I’ve come out the other end of more than a few heartbreaks and finally ended up with a wife I couldn’t love any more than I do. But I remember the times this song broke me and so many others into pieces. The truth can hurt. But man it can also feel good to hear sometimes.

3. U2 “Where the Streets Have No Name”

The song builds in such a gorgeous way. It also takes its time and lets you get ready. When it takes off, it’s over. The desire to want to find a way out of the places we can put ourselves becomes available and……shiver.
